Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg's foundation funds the lab's homecoming and expands direct grants for independent artists.

The Sundance Institute has announced the return of its Directors Lab to the Sundance Mountain Resort, made possible by a $3 million grant from the Hearthland Foundation, the philanthropic vehicle of Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg. The gift also allocates resources to increase direct funding for independent artists developing new work.
The Directors Lab, a cornerstone program for emerging fiction filmmakers, had been displaced from its historic Utah location in recent years. Its return to the resort signals a reinvestment in the intensive, residential workshop model that has launched numerous notable careers since its inception.
Beyond the lab's physical return, the foundation's support will broaden the Institute's capacity to provide unrestricted grants to artists at critical stages of project development. This expanded funding aims to alleviate financial pressures that often stall independent productions before they reach production or festival circuits.
This brief draws on reporting from Sundance Institute.
